What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable prescription medicine for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles on your face. Dr. Tumbaga uses Botox injections to temporarily decrease the appearance of frown lines between your brows as well as crow’s feet wrinkles around your eyes.

This well-established and effective medicine is made from a toxin produced by a bacteria. Botulinum toxin can be poisonous in large amounts, but the doses used in Botox injections are too small and weak to cause harm.

How does Botox get rid of wrinkles?

Botox works by blocking specific nerve signals that make muscles in your face contract. When Dr. Tumbaga injects the Botox, your muscles relax. This relaxing effect reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Since Botox works on muscles, it doesn’t reduce wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity.

Who is Botox for?

Botox is approved for adults age 18 and older. Millions of people around the world rely on Botox to help improve:

  • Crow’s feet wrinkles around your eyes
  • Vertical frown lines between your brows
  • Lines and wrinkles on your forehead

You shouldn’t get Botox if any of the following applies:

  • You’re pregnant or nursing
  • You have a neuromuscular disease
  • You have weak facial muscles or uneven features

What should I expect from a Botox procedure?

Most Botox treatments take Dr. Tumbaga about ten minutes. She injects the medicine into the targeted muscles of your face with a fine needle. Dr. Tumbaga may use ice to numb the treatment area, but the procedure shouldn’t be painful.

Botox requires no downtime, and you can return to work or your daily activities immediately after your appointment. Side effects are minimal, but may include the following:

    • Headaches
    • Eyelid drooping
    • Temporary bruising at the injection site

You may see the effects of your Botox injection within a day or two after treatment, but some adults don’t see any improvement in their wrinkles. Botox results last about three to four months before your muscles return to normal activity. After that period, you may wish for another treatment.
